Ghibli Puzzles Ranked: Which One Should You Build First?
The ENSKY Studio Ghibli puzzle range is one of the most extensive licensed puzzle catalogs available anywhere. Every major film is represented, most across multiple formats and piece counts, with images selected specifically for their quality as standalone art rather than just as film scenes. The range is deep enough that the choice can feel genuinely overwhelming if you're new to it.
This ranking is based on actual build experience with the images, visual impact of the finished result, and how well each film's imagery translates into the puzzle format. It's opinionated. That's the point.
The art poster format: why it matters
Most of the best Ghibli puzzles are art poster format - 1000 pieces, finished size 38x53 cm, designed to be framed and hung. The images in this format are selected for their quality as prints, not just as recognizable scenes. When we recommend a Ghibli puzzle for display, we're almost always talking about art poster format. If you're going to build one Ghibli puzzle, make it an art poster. The finished result is something worth putting on a wall.
1. Spirited Away - the strongest overall range
Spirited Away has more puzzle formats than any other Ghibli film, and most of them are excellent. The bathhouse imagery - warm light, rich architectural detail, dense composition - translates exceptionally well into puzzle form. The No-Face scenes, the boiler room, the ensemble cast in the bathhouse - each of these produces a finished puzzle with enough visual information to keep the build interesting without becoming frustrating. Multiple art poster options exist, and the character designs are distinctive enough to give you clear anchor points throughout.
For new builders, Spirited Away is the most reliable starting point in the Ghibli range. For collectors, it's the one with the deepest catalog. Our dedicated guide to Spirited Away puzzles covers every format in the range.
2. My Neighbor Totoro - the warmest build
Totoro puzzles are consistent in a way that almost no other franchise puzzle range is. The palette is warm, the imagery is immediately comforting, and the range spans from 150-piece mini art poster formats to full 1000-piece ensemble builds. A completed Totoro puzzle on any wall, in any room, works. The appeal crosses age groups in a way almost nothing else in our catalog does - we've sold these to grandparents for grandchildren and to adults buying them for themselves with equal regularity. Our Totoro puzzle guide covers the full range.
3. Princess Mononoke - most dramatic when framed
For sheer visual impact on a wall, Mononoke is the standout. The color palette - rich forest greens, dark reds, dramatic skies over the ironworks - produces a finished puzzle that commands attention. It's also a more challenging build than Totoro, with more subtle variation in the background forest sections. If you've done a few Ghibli puzzles already and want something that will push your technique and look exceptional when framed, this is the one. Full details in our Mononoke puzzle guide.
4. Kiki's Delivery Service - most charming, lightest palette
Kiki puzzles have a lighter, more pastel quality that makes them approachable without being boring. The coastal European setting is visually distinct from anything else in the Ghibli range. The sky sections can be surprisingly tricky - large areas of blue with subtle cloud gradients - but the character moments and rooftop scenes are among the most pleasant sections to build in the entire catalog. Our Kiki puzzle guide covers every size.
5. Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa, Porco Rosso
Ghibli's earlier films have smaller puzzle ranges but some of the most beautiful individual images. The floating island in Castle in the Sky, the Valley of the Wind in Nausicaa, the Adriatic seaplane sequences in Porco Rosso - each produces finished puzzles of exceptional quality that most Ghibli collectors consider essential. Guides for each: Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa, Porco Rosso.
Beyond jigsaws: Miniatuart and paper craft
Once you've built a few Ghibli puzzles, the Miniatuart paper craft series is worth exploring - three-dimensional layered paper models of Ghibli scenes and architecture, made using traditional Japanese craft techniques. The finished objects belong in a display case, not a toy chest. Our Miniatuart guide covers the full range.
