Ghibli Puzzles Ranked: Which One Should You Build First?
The ENSKY Studio Ghibli puzzle range covers virtually every major film in the studio's catalog, across multiple formats and piece counts. If you're new to the range and trying to decide where to start, the choice can feel overwhelming. Here's an honest ranking based on visual impact, build enjoyment, and how the finished puzzle looks displayed.
The art poster format: a quick primer
Most of the best Ghibli puzzles come in the art poster format — 1000 pieces, 38x53 cm, designed to be framed and hung as a print. The images are specifically chosen for their visual quality as standalone art, not just as scenes from the film. If you're going to build one Ghibli puzzle, make it an art poster. The finished result is genuinely something worth displaying.
Spirited Away: the strongest overall
Spirited Away has the deepest and most visually varied puzzle range of any Ghibli film. The bathhouse setting gives the image a warmth and density of detail that's immediately satisfying to build, and the character designs — No-Face, the soot sprites, Yubaba — are visually distinctive enough to give you plenty of anchor points throughout the build. Multiple art poster options exist, and the ensemble scenes are among the best ENSKY has produced. Our dedicated guide to Spirited Away puzzles covers every option in the range.
My Neighbor Totoro: the warmest build
Totoro puzzles are the most reliably enjoyable to build. The palette is warm, the imagery is immediately comforting, and the range spans from 150-piece mini art poster formats to full 1000-piece ensemble builds. A completed Totoro puzzle on the wall works in any room and appeals to virtually any age. Our full guide to Totoro puzzles covers the complete range.
Princess Mononoke: the most dramatic
For sheer visual drama, Mononoke is the standout. The color palette — rich forest greens, dark reds, dramatic skies — produces a finished puzzle that's striking on any wall. It's also a more challenging build than Totoro, with more subtle color variation in the background sections. Our guide to Princess Mononoke puzzles covers every format available.
Kiki's Delivery Service: the most charming
Kiki puzzles tend toward a lighter, more pastel palette that makes them approachable and visually appealing without being particularly challenging. The coastal and sky sections can be tricky, but the character moments are among the most pleasant to build in the Ghibli range. See our full guide on Kiki's Delivery Service puzzles for every size and format.
Castle in the Sky, Nausicaä, Porco Rosso
Ghibli's earlier films have smaller puzzle ranges but often feature some of the most beautiful single images in the catalog. Castle in the Sky's floating island imagery, Nausicaä's dramatic landscapes, and Porco Rosso's Mediterranean seaplanes all produce finished puzzles of exceptional quality. Each has a dedicated guide: Castle in the Sky, Nausicaä, and Porco Rosso.
Where to start
For a first Ghibli puzzle: Spirited Away or Totoro. Both have strong ranges, excellent image quality, and finished results you'll want to display. If you prefer a more challenging build, Mononoke or Castle in the Sky. If you want something lighter and quicker, Kiki. The Ghibli Miniatuart paper craft series — three-dimensional models of scenes from the films — is worth exploring once you're familiar with the jigsaw range. Our guide to Miniatuart kits covers that format in full.
